ABILENE, Texas –Daniel Alexander, an attorney from Los Angeles, CA, has been chosen as the 2013 at-large recipient of the McMurry University Cross & Flame Award. He will be recognized at the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service on Sept. 15 at Hollywood United Methodist Church in Hollywood, CA.
Established in 2000 by the McMurry Alumni Association, this award is given to strengthen the relationship between McMurry University and the United Methodist Church by recognizing individuals for service to their churches and to the University.
Alexander has been a member of Hollywood UMC since 2007. He serves as the Chair of the Board of Trustees, and represents the Trustees on the church’s Governance Board. In 2012 and 2013, Daniel was an elected lay delegate to the California-Pacific Annual Conference.
“Daniel excels in leadership and visioning in service to Christ. He devotes hours each week guiding our congregation towards growth and excellence,” said Rev. Kathy Cooper-Ledesma, senior pastor at Hollywood UMC. “Daniel’s discipleship is profoundly manifest. He invites friends to worship, encouraging them in faith. God’s spirit is at work in Daniel, and we are blessed.”
Alexander is the son of Alvin and Seven Alexander of Matador, Texas. A Summa Cum Laude alumnus of McMurry University, Daniel served on the McMurry University Board of Trustees and as the President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors (AABOD) from 2011-13. In 2007, Alexander, along with several other board members, was instrumental in changing the structure of the AABOD to increase its effectiveness in recruiting and operations. This year, the AABOD, with a 100% participation rate, raised $20,000 for the University to receive a matching grant. Alumna Sarah Weddington created the Daniel Alexander Leadership Training Fund to honor Alexander and his service to McMurry, which included working with others to create a Servant Leadership Center Advisory Board and serving as its first Chair.
